Macomb Community Action still in urgent need of Meals on Wheels volunteers
Macomb Community Action Office of Senior Services is seeking volunteers to assist with the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program, specifically for the winter months.
The Office of Senior Services Meals on Wheels program serves a warm, nutritious meal to more than 1,700 homebound senior citizens daily. Meals on Wheels relies on hundreds of volunteers every day to deliver meals across Macomb County. This month, many of these dedicated volunteers took a break and headed south for warmer weather. This has created a huge gap and increased the need for volunteers.
Volunteers that deliver for Meals on Wheels help give seniors a nutritious meal and also provide a welfare check to ensure they are safe. The welfare checks are very critical during the winter months, when the weather is exceptionally cold and frigid.
All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or be accompanied by a parent or authorized adult. All volunteers will be required to pass a background check. If planning to help deliver meals, please plan to use your own vehicle and to be on the road for an estimated two hours. Delivery drivers must have a valid driver's license and proof of current insurance.
Routes are delivered Monday - Friday typically between 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Volunteers are allowed to select their own meal pick-up site and deliver meals within their own community. To register as a MOW volunteer or for more information, contact Macomb Community Action Office of Senior Services at (586) 469-5228 or fill out the registration form online.
Meals on Wheels is a national program designed for older adults who are home-bound and unable to prepare meals for themselves.
