Genisys Credit Union helps keep the heat on for low-income residents, presents Macomb Community Action with Walk for Warmth donation

Just in time for fall and furnace season, Genisys Credit Union has presented Macomb Community Action with a $3,305 donation in support of the Walk for Warmth event. The program, which raises funds to help low-income individuals pay for heating bills, furnace repairs, furnace replacements and other heat-related emergencies, is held annually in February.

“This is an incredibly important event for Macomb County and for our residents who are helped by the funds raised,” said County Executive Mark Hackel. “I’d like to thank Genisys Credit Union for their contributions to our effort. Their organization and their employees have been so supportive over the years, and we appreciate their ongoing partnership. It truly benefits individuals and families who make Macomb their home.”

The 2022 Walk for Warmth was the 32nd annual event for Macomb Community Action. Approximately 100 people participated in the virtual effort, which was held from February 20 – February 26.

“Year after year, residents and businesses prove that Macomb County is a community that cares for those in need,” said Ernest Cawvey, director of Macomb Community Action. “The funds raised from this event make a real difference in community members’ lives. We couldn't do the good work that we do at Macomb Community Action without all of this support from Macomb residents and our partners.”

“Working in partnership with service agencies like Macomb Community Action gives Genisys an opportunity to lend support to our community neighbors who need it the most,” said Jackie Buchanan, president & CEO of Genisys Credit Union. “A big thank you to our employees, members, friends and family, for the dedication and enthusiasm they have towards our fundraising campaign to benefit MCA’s Walk for Warmth. This would not be possible without your support.”

Additional sponsors for this year’s event include Consumers Energy and San Francesco Church.

Since it began, the event has raised over $775,000 to help ensure that local families can stay warm in their homes throughout the winter. In 2021 alone, the event helped support

  • 20 households
  • Over 29 individuals
  • Percentage of single parent families: 10 percent
  • Percentage of families at 100 percent poverty and below: 42 percent
  • Percentage of those helped who are children: 10 percent
  • Percentage of those helped who are elderly: 38 percent
  • Percentage of those helped who are disabled: 10 percent
